Luis is 10 years old, and was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in June 2014. He received chemotherapy for his illness and unfortunately, he had a recurrence of his illness in March 2015. At that time, he underwent brain surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, and then received a course of radiation to try to keep the tumor from growing back. Thus far, Luis has done pretty well. He has had some secondary effects from his illness, including some behavior problems, and some learning issues for which he receives services at school. Luis is in the 3rd grade at Pacoima Elementary school and he has an IEP in place which helps guide his school in how best to maximize his learning and help him keep up with his classmates. He still struggles with some of the emotional impact of his illness and treatment. Luis lives with his mom (Laura) and 3 siblings ages 19 (Luz), 16 (Juan Pablo) and 15 (Gizelle) in Pacoima. Luis comes from a humble, low income home. His mom is a single mom who works hard to support her family. The family has no car and they take public transportation everywhere. When Luis has to come to the hospital, Luis and his mom take several buses to get here – they are always on time and have been very diligent about his medical care. Luis and his family are extremely grateful for this wonderful opportunity to attend a Dodger’s game, as this would be financially prohibitive for this family.
